Description of the job


  • Currently enrolled in Degree program in Social Sciences, Native Studies, Community Development, Political Science and/or Public Administration, Communications, and or related field of study

  • Extensive knowledge of Indigenous History and Culture

  • Awareness and understanding of Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Calls to Action; The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls National Inquiry and Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, verbally and in writing

  • Previous engagement experience will be considered an asset

  • Experience in program development or coordination would be an asset

  • Proficiency with software such as Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

  • Currently enrolled and returning to school or a Post -Secondary Institution in the fall

The Indigenous Peoples summer opportunity program falls within the Indigenous Peoples recruitment strategy, which outlines the City’s commitment to recruit Indigenous Peoples to our workforce.



The role will support in the delivery of internal and external activities and initiatives within the Indigenous Relations Office. You will assist in building positive and respectful relationships between Indigenous leaders, community members, Elders, and City Staff, as well as assist in supporting a body of work informed by the City of Edmonton Indigenous Framework, City Council Declaration on Strengthening Relationships with Urban Aboriginal Peoples, the Urban Aboriginal Accord, and the City of Edmonton MOU partnerships that help in advance the City’s strategic goals.


An understanding of the historical and current trends in Federal and Provincial legislation/policy and associated guidelines is beneficial, as well as an understanding of the current political and social context of Indigenous Relations in Canada.


Your duties will include:



  • Support the Indigenous Relations Office with the implementation of the Indigenous Framework; including administrative support to corporate committees

  • Research and analysis related to Indigenous Framework commitments and actions

  • Support for community engagement activities, including engagement with Elders, youth, and Indigenous communities

  • Event planning; venues, catering, expenses, agendas, and other duties associated with coordination

  • Create documents, engagement logs, and other materials required for consultation and meetings

  • Minute taking and development of agendas may be required

  • Create reports, plans, information packages, presentations, and project summaries

  • Other duties as required
